Once upon a time in a lab far far away…
Episode IV
WIEDEN AND KENNEDY! A New Hope!
It is a period of unrest in the lab. Internships looming this summer were giving the students a great deal of stress. It seemed there was very little to bring the anxiety down and return hope to a lost lab.
Amidst the stress a beacon of light came in the name of Wieden and Kennedy recruiter Lauren Ranke. She came to the lab armored with tips and tricks for good interviews and portfolios that are worthy of the great company of W+K.
Pursed by the students of the lab, Lauren raced to Jeff’s secret office, custodian of the secret tips that can save the students and bring internships to the lab…
WIEDEN AND KENNEDY
Incase you were in a cave and missed yesterday’s amazing recruiting from W+K here are a few of the hints she gave us. The rest of the secrets will go with us to the grave.
- Courage. A book that is brave and takes risks is something that really gets W+K going. They love to see people pushing the boundaries of typical advertising.
- Personal sections are awesome! What are you doing when you are not doing advertising? W+K cares and loves to see that sort of thing in your book.
- Quality over quantity. Just because you love that old dusty campaign that features myspace doesn’t mean you need to leave it in your book. A good advertiser knows how to edit themselves. Sometimes it’s time to drop the older campaigns. But it also goes the other way around, sometimes you the newest thing you are working on may not be right for your book.
- Resume. This is a unique one that you don’t hear very often. W+K likes to know what you’ve done and where you’ve been. They like to see a resume. Keep an updated one on your website and with your book.
- Finding a creative director team that you like working with is as important as finding a company or a brand. Your boss will be your biggest asset as a new creative, so make sure you do some research and figure out who you want to work for and with.
We joke about W+K being a new hope for the lab, but it really was great having them come out and visit. We’ve been very blessed these past few months to have so many great agency visits and this was no exception. We want to extend a very big Thank You to Lauren and we hope to see her again real soon!
